The image used was a stock image I found on Unsplash, and the process behind the image included messing with the various filter gallery options, especially the poster edges effect and halftoning effects. I also put a threshold on the image as well as a gradient overlay to make everything two-tone. The addition of the rectangles was an abstract art approach to the image as they are meant to lead the eye around the image as well as pull a lot of the attention.
